A portrait and interview project
Verhalen die je niet kent
Stories you don't know
A series of portraits and interviews with East and Southeast Asian residents of the Netherlands, about how they made this country their home. The end result is a book.
The visual approach
Each portrait is created in a single colour, stylised, without skin tone, age or ethnic features. A photograph tells the viewer something before the story is read. These portraits remove that bias, so the viewer is guided not by how someone looks, but by what someone tells.
Portraits created live at Build Your Archive, Rotterdam, in the visual language of this project.
The interviews
Same questions, different answers
Every participant is asked the same core questions. Together, their answers will form the book. A few of them:
- What does home mean to you?
- How did you make this place your home?
- What did you bring with you and keep alive here?
These are the stories you don't know yet.
