I've always enjoyed browsing the shops or online for gift ideas that I think might suit the recipient. But now that I have kids, time is more scarce and I have to be pretty quick with coming up with ideas and actually getting the gift.

When I first started painting custom portraits for people, most were intended to be gifted. People told me it was great that they could get something so personal and one-of-a-kind for someone else. And all they had to do was send me a photo, and leave the rest to me.

I naturally feel some pressure to make something worthy of a keepsake. And to be entrusted by someone else to create it. At the same time, I absolutely love being part of the process, and I love to see the recipients with their portraits and hearing what they thought when they opened the gift.

What both the custom portraits and greeting cards have in common are that they are keepsakes that people actually keep. Receiving something that has been made especially for you, and that is the only one in the world, would tug the heartstrings of even the most unsentimental person.
Knowing that someone has spent the time picking out photos, searching out an artist, or just building a portrait of you themselves, shows the sincerity of the thought.
