Everything You Need to Know About Personalised Watercolour Portraits
Share
Looking for a truly meaningful gift or a way to celebrate a special memory? Personalised watercolour portraits are more than just beautiful art — they’re thoughtful keepsakes, hand-painted with love. Whether you're thinking of turning a wedding photo into a painting or wondering how the whole process works, this guide will walk you through it.
What is a custom watercolour portrait?
A custom watercolour portrait is a painting created just for you — using your photo as a reference, I recreate it by hand in my unique watercolour style. Each portrait captures not just how you look, but a feeling — your personality, your story, a shared moment.
You can choose between traditional watercolour on paper or digitally painted watercolour, which is still hand-drawn but allows for more flexibility and faster delivery.
Are watercolour portraits a good gift idea?
Absolutely. Whether it’s a birthday, wedding, anniversary, or a “just because” surprise, a personalised watercolour portrait shows thought, care, and creativity. It's the kind of gift people keep forever — a one-of-a-kind reminder of a person, pet, event, or place they love.
Many of my clients also order portraits for Mother’s Day, Christmas, or even to commemorate a lost loved one in a gentle, meaningful way.
How do I commission a watercolour portrait?
Commissioning a portrait is easy and personal. Here’s how it works:
- Choose your style – individual, couple, friends, family, or pet portrait.
- Upload a clear photo (or a few!) that shows the person’s face well.
- Send any personalisation requests – background ideas, outfits, props, or even a favourite book or record.
- I’ll paint your portrait by hand, and you’ll receive a digital preview or your final artwork depending on your order.
Want it printed as a gift? I offer professional art prints and leterbox-ready packaging in the Netherlands.
What photo should I use for a custom portrait?
The best photos are well-lit, clear, and show the person's face and features. Front-facing or slightly angled shots work well. If you're unsure, feel free to send me a few options — I’m happy to advise!
For themed portraits (like my Music Lover or Christmas Collection), you just need a clear face photo and I’ll take care of the rest with the pre-designed outfits and props.
How much does a personalised watercolour portrait cost?
Prices vary depending on the type and number of people or pets in the portrait. My themed portraits start at €12, while fully custom portraits start at € 20 and vary based on size and detail.
There are no hidden costs — and every piece is created by hand, never AI-generated or templated. It’s an accessible art experience designed to bring joy.
Can I turn a wedding photo into a watercolour portrait?
Yes, and they turn out beautifully. Wedding portraits are some of the most requested commissions I get — full of emotion, detail, and elegance. You can even include flowers, special locations, or the wedding outfits in full watercolour charm.
Where can I order a hand-painted family portrait?
You can order directly from my webshop Portraits by Jun-Yi, where you’ll find options for custom family portraits, themed illustrations, and even an online portrait designer where you can mix and match your own portrait! I ship across the Netherlands and internationally.
What’s the difference between digital and traditional watercolour portraits?
Traditional portraits are painted with watercolour on paper and scanned or shipped to you.
Digital portraits are hand-painted using a tablet and digital brushes, with the same attention to detail — perfect for those who want quicker delivery or multiple prints.
Both are 100% hand-painted by me (never auto-generated), and I’m always happy to recommend what suits your needs best.
Do watercolour portraits include pets or couples?
Yes! I love painting animals and relationships of all kinds — couples, best friends, siblings, grandparents with grandkids, even you and your cat. Just mention how many people (or pets!) you'd like included when ordering, and I’ll create a portrait that reflects your connection.
How long does it take to paint a watercolour portrait?
Typical turnaround time is 5–10 business days, depending on the level of detail and whether it’s a digital or printed piece. For rush orders or specific delivery dates (like birthdays or holidays), just let me know — I’ll always do my best to accommodate.
